Dirt Day!

As Vermont’s long-awaited spring unfurls and finds many of us eager to get our hands in the soil, Green Mountain Global Forum (GMGF) will host a day of events focused on dirt!

On Sunday, May 18, starting at 4pm at the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield Richard Czaplinksi will start the event with a hands-on workshop on how to simply and easily turn your food scraps and yard waste into rich, soil-building compost. If you have always wanted to learn how to make compost, or want to learn how to encourage your compost to turn to soil more quickly, this workshop is for you.

From 5 to 6:30, Lisa Ransom from Grow Compost and John Malter of Mad River Resource Management Alliance will both be on hand with seed planting activities and composting information. There will be live music during this time with Phineas Gage, as well as organic, local culinary offerings available to purchase from the Big Picture's menu from 5 to 9:00.

At 7:00, GMGF will show Dirt! The Movie. However you feel about the stuff coating your car and sullying your mudroom, you will feel differently about it when you emerge from "Dirt! The Movie." It's funny and profound, and one of those rare documentaries that educates, energizes, and leaves you feeling good about what you can do in your daily life to be a better earthling. Narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis, Dirt! The Movie is an insightful, timely, and touching film.  This film also features the famous "I Will Be A Hummingbird" sequence with Kenyan environmental and political activist Wangari Maathai. The film will be followed by a short question-and-answer session.

John Levey, the Fayston-based Dirty Hands Man, will close out the evening with some more live music starting at 8:30.
